The Dreamer’s Bal
Saturday, May 4, 2019
8:00 PM – 1:00 AM
IngenuityLabs at The Hamilton Collaborative
5401 Hamilton Avenue, Cleveland, Ohio, 44114

Ingenuity’s annual fundraiser is an off-kilter gala unlike anything else in town! Once known as the Bal Ingenieux, the yearly spring event now boasts a different theme with each incarnation, featuring the region’s artists, makers, and creatives while paying homage to Cleveland’s exclusive arts club that dominated modernist arts in the city from the 1910s until the 1940s. The Kokoon Club’s annual “Bal Masque” challenged artistic norms with the most unconventional parties around.

Today, Ingenuity’s Bal supports our year-round programming in an exciting and creative way. Secure your tickets now to experience one-of-a-kind immersive artwork, live music and performance, local food and drink, all while contributing to the creation of a year-round center for innovation that supports creative entrepreneurs and welcomes the entire community with open doors.

Join us to support free weekly programming for the neighborhood and creatives alike, the new Ignite! sessions for entrepreneurs, IngenuityLabs Incubator, as well as our annual collaborations with the partners of the Hamilton Collaborative, . . .  become part of Cleveland’s home for creativity!

What will I belhold in my Wildest Dreams?
Visitors will enter unique second-floor space of our hundred-year-old factory to find a dreamscape filled with larger-than-life artwork, including a bedroom that shrinks guests to ankle level and floating dreamboats that explore the idea of “what your bed becomes while you sleep” . . . climb aboard pirate ships, snuggle in a giant birds nest, let your dreams roar to life in a racecar, or float amid the crowd in a hot air balloon.

Musical guests range from the intimate – Taylor Lamborn and Uno Lady perform solo – to the extravagant funk-focused New Orleans Style Jazz of Revolution Brass Band.    We’ll also feature Gypsy-Jazz project Moustache Yourself, neo-soul groove project Nah Nah (think: Postmodern Jukebox) and, to make sure no one leaves before dancing the night away, the irresistable jams of  DJ Byron SquareBiz Lee.

Performance will include dance offerings from Get Hep! Swing and Viva Dance Studio, plus the quirky roaming characters of Nerdy Dancers of the CLEFire and Light Performing Art, and Sam Novak, performance artist. Enjoy dazzling Aerial and Pole performance from the strong and sultry students of Be Studios/Be Fitness. Plus immersive meditation from Selfspace.

Libations, Little Bites, and Other Partnerships We’re thrilled to present a range of custom cocktails from our friends at Watershed Distillery, plus new flavors and classic favorites from Platform Beer

And we couldn’t be happier to announce a new partnership with Ohio City Galley, the foodhall-meets-incubator bringing offerings from all four kitchens: Poca, Sauce the City, Tinman, and The Rice Shop! Enjoy sweets from Pierre’s and Sweet Costo, and commemorate the evening with a special snapshot from the themed photobooth built by Liza Sue Productions.

Multimedia Installations include projections by Kevin Jackson and Ross Bochnek, the Artwork of Amanda Nyx, Michael McFarland, John Kasunich, Tom Stoll, Paige Knoefel, Ian Keating-Mullaney, Adam Patterson, Ryan Kinney, and many more talented artists who work every week with The Ingeneers.

Attendees should plan to wear “the costume of their dreams” . . . whether dreamwear means the fantastical trappings of knights and princesses and fairies, the Sandman’s ensemble or garb of a monster under the bed, or even cozy PJ’s! We’d love you to consider the environment in creating your costume – visit our friends from Upcycle Parts Shop and mention “Ingenuity Dreamer’s Bal” for a special discount! All ticket sales support Ingenuity Cleveland’s low-cost, accessible year-round community programming! Ingenuity Announces Details for The Dreamer’s Bal on May 4, 2019

Ingenuity Cleveland’s Dreamer’s Bal May 4, 2019
. . . step into a living daydream, and awaken the creativity in YOU!

Each spring, Ingenuity Cleveland unites and showcases the region’s artists, makers, and creatives with its annual fundraiser Bal . . . be a part of the dream!

The theme for Ingenuity’s 2019 fundraiser is the Dreamer’s Bal – the surreal creation of a living daydream – which will take place on Saturday, May 4 from 8:00pm until 1:00am (May 5) at IngenuityLabs in the Hamilton Collaborative (5401 Hamilton Avenue, Cleveland). The event will support the annual 20,000-attendee IngenuityFest as well as Ingenuity’s year-round arts and entrepreneurship programs, drawing talent from the enthusiastic year-round community served by these activities. Come see what these creatives have to offer!

Attendees of this year’s Bal will step into an ethereal landscape of subconscious hopes and aspirations once latent or ignored, brought to fruition by larger-than-life art installations, immersive music and dance performances, and some engaging surprises! Headlined by Cleveland’s New Orleans style favorite, Revolution Brass Band, the Bal will present a mix of jazz, funk, swing and more. With Moustache Yourself, Get Hep Swing, pole and aerial dancers from Be Fitness, Viva Dance Studio, sweet tunes from the award-winning Uno Lady, Taylor Lamborn, dance beats from SquareBiz, and so much more.

Like the previous Bals Ingenieux, Bal Aquatique, and the Time Traveler’s Bal, The Dreamer’s Bal makes reference to the historic masked bals of the Kokoon Club, who defined Cleveland’s raucous avant-garde art scene at the turn of the century.

“The Bal is a celebration of the authentic regional dreams and talents that have led us to this space and time,” says Emily Appelbaum, Artistic Director. “Once a bustling city of innovative manufacturing, Cleveland – and our little corner of history here at the Hamilton Collaborative – is re-awakening to find that the Made-in-Cleveland stamp, whether on a cast iron furnaces, a piece of craft furniture or an immersive art experience, still holds great value.”

The Dreamer’s Bal supports IngenuityFest 2019: Dreamscapes, held September 27-29 and celebrating its 15th year as a staple Cleveland event and its fourth year at the Hamilton Collaborative. Proceeds also support Ingenuity’s year-round programming including the IngenuityLabs small creative business incubator, the volunteer-driven arts group The Ingeneers, and the newly-launched Ignite! entrepreneurship education series.

General admission tickets are $25 ($35 at door) and include entry and food. VIP tickets are priced at $65 and include entry, food, two drink tickets, and a few special extras!

This event is ages 21 and up.
Purchase tickets on Eventbrite.

Community members interested in volunteering at the event or helping transform the IngenuityLabs warehouse space can attend an upcoming art workshop held at the Hamilton Collaborative by joining The Ingeneers on Facebook, or sign up to volunteer at the event online.

About Ingenuity Cleveland:
Ingenuity Cleveland highlights the creativity and innovation that make Cleveland a vibrant place to live. We ignite the spark where the arts, science, and technology intersect. By animating Cleveland’s urban spaces with world-class experiences, Ingenuity provides a unique platform for exploring the boundaries across these sectors. We do this through our outreach programs, partnerships and events including our annual IngenuityFest.

Ingenuity is now entering its 14th year and is funded by the George Gund Foundation, Cuyahoga Arts and Culture, and the Ohio Arts Council as well as many other businesses, non-profits, and private individuals. The three-day IngenuityFest 2019: Dreamscapes, which will create a combined economic impact of $4.5 million to Cleveland’s economy, will return September 27-29.

WinterActive Collaboration with Brite Winter and Arts Van Aken!

Ingenuity is proud to support a Request for Proposals issued by Brite Winter and Arts Van Aken (AVA), the arts-based placemaking initiative of Shaker Heights Development Corporation (SHDC). We are seeking proposals from local and regional artists for the inaugural Winteractive, a free outdoor exhibition of interactive light art to be installed in and around the Van Aken District in February of 2019. Artists and designers are encouraged to submit ideas that use light-based contemporary sculptures and installations to bring the community together for an opportunity to interact with each other and the District during the coldest, darkest month of the year.
Up to five art installations will be accepted, with a focus on light as a primary medium and whose work creates opportunities for viewers to become participants in the exhibition. Whether a viewer can manipulate the artwork, or the artwork manipulates the viewer’s experience of space, some form of interactivity will be sought in the chosen works. Such encounters should support the notion of an inclusive, democratic space that connects and engages people of every demographic in Shaker Heights and its surrounding communities.

With just shy of 100 scheduled stage slots, IngenuityFest 2018: FuturePast, has SO much to offer in terms of performing arts. From headliners OSHUN (the sonic embodiment of Afrofutursim) and Dressy Bessy (Long-running punk pop rock band out of Denver) to our Pittsburgh-based friends and neighbors Squonk, who will bring us Pneumatica, a large-scale circus-opera brought to life with wind, air, and kinetic energy.

But did you know we’ll also have jazz, classical piano, poetry and spoken word, as well as a  *record number* of dance groups coming to the event, activating our first-ever multiplatform, multimedia dance stage (the Tesseract Stage), plus our beloved Ingenuity Cabaret!

The different art forms and apparatus we have represented span from belly dance to pole to silks and lyra to wall-dancing in rock climbing rigging to the flow arts (hoops and tons of other props) to African dance, modern/contemporary, ballet, burlesque, swing, b-boy/hip hop and more! Whew!

Top it all off with an assortment of the best Cleveland has to offer from local indie punk bands, singer-songwriters, multimedia performance groups, nightly DJ dance parties, and even a few pop-up renegade performances.

Ingenuity Announces Artistic Programming, Exhibitions, and More for 14th Annual IngenuityFest: FuturePast, September 28-30, 2018

Cleveland, OH (September 19th, 2018) – Following last week’s announcement of its headlining performance acts OSHUN, Dressy Bessy and Squonk’s Pneumatica, Ingenuity Cleveland is thrilled to release details of its artistic programming and exhibitions for the 2018 IngenuityFest, Cleveland’s longest running festival of art and technology. IngenuityFest is celebrating its 14th year with the theme FuturePast: a reimagined future of community and human-centered technologies paying homage to Cleveland’s industrial heritage and the former factory (now the Hamilton Collaborative) that Ingenuity calls home.

Ingenuity’s programming centers on IngenuityLabs, the organization’s year-round home within the Hamilton Collaborative, and the site of its key programs including the IngenuityLabs Incubator. Projects by more than a dozen Incubator tenants will be on display, including the Time Traveler’s Emporium by Astrocelt, interactive offerings from the Makers Alliance, and MAYA by Dave Biro’s newly launched Cleveland Design Studios – a large scale metal sculpture supported by Ingenuity Cleveland and the MPB Charitable Foundation.

Notable collaborations also include incubator tenant Fire and Light Performing Art’s multi-prop performances and MorrisonDance’s newest version of its ground-breaking vertical dance collaboration with Ingenuity, entitled DancEscapes of the Future/Past, both of which will perform Friday and Saturday night. Longtime festival favorite Tesla Orchestra has teamed up with Plasmosis, Skuda Productions and Muséus Project, along with Ingenuity Cleveland’s Ingeneers – a group of artists, engineers, designers, builders and volunteers who meet weekly in IngenuityLabs – to produce new multimedia performances.

Other projects by the Ingeneers include landscapes to play, build, climb and dig in, including an archeology pit full of hidden treasures, led by Nelson Morris.

Technology offerings include Casual VR by IngenuityLabs member Ross Bochnek, Cleveland Game Developers, and artists George Berlin (Patchy Projects, Chicago) and longtime Ingenuity exhibitor Jared Bendis, who blend gaming and digital innovation with interactive installation art.

Younger attendees can enjoy a dedicated youth area – the Ingenuity Unplugged Trading Post and Imaginarium – full books, games, make n’ take crafts to help suit young Time Travelers. There, weary young’uns will also find a plush tent to take a break from the rigors of the wider festival. Artists Lindsay Stefans and Brad Civic also celebrate quiet contemplation with meditative installations.

Other youth-friendly activities include the Projection Play Place by Owen Lowery and a wide range of hands-on exhibits from partners like the Cleveland Museum of Art and Cleveland Public Library in Makers Mecca.

Ingenuity will once again welcome guests to the Forest Foundry, a former scrapyard blooming with new life thanks to a partnership with Rust Belt Riders, who will demonstrate a variety of sustainable technologies. Forest Foundry also pays homage to its industrial roots with large-scale works of metal and fire, including the Incendia Experience (Atlanta), The Urban Forge, and sculptural collaborations between Megan Shane and Kai Wick Studios, which engage youth in the creation of fabricated works including a Mobile Front Porch. Lastly, the Ministry of Butterflies will return, this year bringing an assortment of colorful hands-on activities demonstrating the power of air, gravity and water.

After all the excitement of a day spent navigating these Future Frontiers, Ingenuity is excited to welcome guests to the Nuclear Future, featuring Day-Glo Black-Light Mini Golf, the Makers Alliance Paint Pendulum, and the tongue-in-cheek Nuclear Beach – an interactive splash pad and place to lounge. Populated by extra-colorful colorful sea creatures and sustainability exhibitors, this large Fest village bears gentle reminders to take care of our planet. Keep an eye out for Drift Lab natural fibers on Saturday, Collinwood Painted Rain Barrel Project on Sunday, and the Cuyahoga County Office of Sustainability.

The festival is held Friday September 28th from 5 pm – 1am; Saturday September 29th from 12 pm – 1 am; and Sunday September 30th from 12 pm – 5 pm. Tickets are $5/Adult, $10/Weekend, and children 12 and under are free. Dozens of local artisan vendors will peddle their wares, and local food vendors will provide a variety of choices, including vegan and vegetarian.

Ingenuity strives for zero waste, and will provide composting and recycling services throughout the festival site in collaboration with Rust Belt Riders. Bottled water will not be available for purchase – please bring your own reusable water bottle or purchase one of ours to fill up for free throughout the site. Beverages are provided at 3 full bars, in proud partnership with local brands Watershed Distillery, ManCan, Platform Beer, Masthead, and Market Garden Brewery.
