Ingenuity 2017 Year In Review!

Ingenuity truly had a remarkable year, making our 2016 Cleveland Creative Collaborative Pilot project into a reality in 2017: IngenuityLabs @ the Hamilton Collaborative. This year we:

  • Completed a research project cataloging 50+ local precedent projects and maker resources in our region to which the Hamilton Collaborative will become a complement; a continuation of our work with the American Maker Cities North coalition, we also documented best practices in similar Rust Belt Cities in Pittsburgh, Washington DC, Baltimore, Detroit, as well as Chicago and the Bay Area, funded by Gund and Burton D Morgan foundations.
  • Secured significant support and new funding for ourselves and our partners at the Hamilton Collaborative.
  • Secured a lease to ensure our future at theHamilton Collaborative, including the site a former scapyard which we are rehabilitating into a teaching garden and sustainability demonstration site, opening up a whole new possibility for programming and partnerships.
  • Completed a new 3-year strategic plan.
  • Celebrated with the Bal: Aquatique – which opened up new spaces in the building and drew attention to our region’s water resources.
  • Launched the inaugural Shaker Makers with the City of Shaker Heights; held dozens of hours of maker-focused and entrepreneur-focused programming, and secured an NEA grant for the continuation of programming in Shaker’s Moreland neighborhood.
  • Produced a never-before-seen vertical dance collaboration with MorrisonDance, with support from Ohio Arts Council.
  • Served hundreds of area youth through special programs; hosted partner events including Saint Martin DePorres “Cleveland Change Makers,” which welcomed dozens of area leaders to speak with local ninth graders.
  • Welcomed thousands of DIY and high-end motorcycle fans by hosting Fuel Cleveland, with anticipated return for 2018
  • Welcomed 10 incubator tenants and built out lockable workspaces to keep them cozy!
  • Held 30+ Ingeneers workshops and build a community of 40+ members; more than 1500+ man hours of volunteer/community collaboration.
  • Constructed, organized, and heated a year-round shop space for large-scale work.
  • Hosted 500+ individual artists on more than 150,000 square feet of programming area for IngenuityFest – exceeded projections for sales and attendance.

Programming, Partners, and More Come Together to Make IngenuityFest 2017 Eco-Friendly

Cleveland, OH (September 18, 2017) – Ingenuity announced that this year’s IngenuityFest will be more sustainable and eco-friendly. Partners include Cleveland Water, Rust Belt Riders, Ohio City Bike Co-Op, and Vegware.

Cleveland Water will be providing their Water Buggy during three sessions at the Festival, offering fresh water in paper cups. Food vendors will use all paper products and biodegradable beer and drink cups from Vegware, a company that makes low-carbon catering disposables from renewable materials.

Rust Belt Riders, an Ingenuity partner and member of the Hamilton Collaborative, will compost these materials on site. Festival attendees can visit the Rust Belt Riders operation in their exhibit, Closed Loop, located in the Forest Foundry village, and learn about their innovative process to transform food waste into compost and animal feed. Additionally, Rust Belt Riders will be offering composting workshops Saturday at 5pm and Sunday at 1 and 3pm.

“At Ingenuity, we believe that innovation, creativity, and environmental sustainability go hand in hand. This year IngenuityFest is going to walk the walk, starting down the path towards a zero-waste event.” says Karen Kidwell, Ingenuity’s Interim Executive Director, “Our new home at the Hamilton Collaborative near Lake Erie is a constant reminder of the treasured resource we all share. Plastic and other debris is accumulating in lakes and oceans, and one way to reduce the amount is to use fewer single-use plastic cups, water bottles, Styrofoam containers, and plastic straws. So this year we’re taking some big steps on the road to zero waste.”

Furthermore, Ohio City Bicycle Co-op is helping the Fest reduce car trips by offering
free bicycle racks (bring your own lock) and a pop-up bike kitchen for basic bike repairs at the 53rd Street entrance. Slow Roll Cleveland will celebrate IngenuityFest with a one-hour ride that starts on Saturday, September 23 at 2 pm at the Marquette gate entrance through the St. Clair-Superior neighborhood. Riders will receive discounted tickets for the Festival, and can enjoy a pop-up bike kitchen and other fun bike groups and activities.

IngenuityFest is September 22-24, 2017 at the Hamilton Collaborative in Saint Clair-Superior (5401 Hamilton Avenue). Adult tickets are $5 for a day pass or $10 for a weekend pass. Children 12 and under are free. Tickets are available for purchase in advance at ingenuityfest2017.eventbrite.com or at the gate.

IngenuityFest Announces Music Headliners and More for September 22-24, 2017

Cleveland, OH (August 21, 2017) – IngenuityFest announced today a number of confirmed bands and headliners scheduled to play at the 13th annual IngenuityFest. This year, the event will feature five stages and an eclectic mix of local, regional and national bands.

Friday’s headliner will be White Mystery, a sibling rock’n’roll duo from Chicago. Since April 20, 2008, White Mystery self-released eight records, played almost 1,000 shows on three continents with the likes of Iggy Pop, Garbage, Thee Ohsees, and Patti Smith; modeled for Levi’s Jeans; performed in the Sundance film Station to Station; earned rave reviews from MTVVICENPR Sound Opinions, and High Times; jammed on a parade float with Sir Richard Branson; and rocked six live songs on the NBC late night TV show, Last Call with Carson Daly. Come and see for yourself what Pitchfork calls, “jovial rock’n’roll delivery and DIY sensibility.”

Saturday, will feature headliner Calliope Musicals – a cheerful psychedelic party folk band from Austin, TX. Recently they were named 2015’s “Best New Band” and 2016’s “Best Band of the Year” in the Austin Chronicle’s Austin Music Awards. This year, they made  NPR’s All Songs Considered’s “Why SXSW Matters: The Best of What We Saw, 2017.”  Billboard.com writes: “The sextet’s bubbly brand of pop-rock (think a more authentically hippied-out Grouplove) holds up — the crowd swells significantly as passersby get sucked into the genuinely good vibes…”

“We’re very excited about this year’s festival, as we work towards our goal of showcasing a more diverse festival, both in the musical and geographical sense,” says James Carol, Ingenuity’s Music Manager. “I’ve always admired the music offered at IngenuityFest.
