The Wheel of Mashup

Description: The ECC spins The Wheel of Mashup and created the Vidimasher 3000 so you won’t suffer just another laptop DJ. It’s a dance party for people with short attention spans, where the audience is invited on stage to spin the Wheel, dance and participate in the show. Spinning the Wheel (actually two wheels, an outer one for music and an inner one for vocals) creates a mashup by taking the music of one pop song and syncing it up to the vocals of another. The music and vocals are mashed together instantaneously — on the spot. The audience can watch it happen on a rear-projected screen that shows the how the music is made though the workings of the technology, including an apparatus hacked from a Wiimote, the hand-held controller from the Nintendo Wii video game.

Bio/Link: The Evolution Control Committee gave birth to the cut-n-paste world of the mashup in the mid-’90s while based in Columbus, Ohio. Transplanted to San Francisco and welcomed as the “Grandfather of Mashups” The ECC once again broke new ground with The Wheel Of Mashup, a live improvised mashup performance (perhaps the only in the world). It’s possible thanks to The ECC’s incredible Vidimasher 3000, which uses software four years in the making… plus a pair of hacked Nintendo Wii controllers.
