Last Son, documentary about the creation of Superman
You escape your father and land in an alien world. You feel different, like you have strange powers. You are set apart. You are unloved in one world. And inspiring in another.
It is hard to imagine any color in 1930s Cleveland. Waves of despair and crime rise over the city and wash it in darkness. The sun seems far away. This would change when two skinny teenagers from Glenville sat down and created the world’s first super-hero: Superman. But like any great creative act, it was not that easy.
LAST SON tells a different side of “the story” in order to finally make sense of a character who really makes no sense with his gleaming spitcurl and underwear on the outside. How could such a strange and colorful character be created? And why?
From pulpy magazines to physical fitness courses to events going on in Cleveland at the time, LAST SON seeks to give its audience an hour-long immersion of this time period to show not only how Superman was created, but how he really was inevitable. Some of the shocking new answers provided by the film include: the true fate of Jerry’s father Michael, who history books have said was murdered in a bloody firefight; the true identity of the inspiration for Lois Lane; and, even more shocking, did Jerry and Joe really come up with that first Superman story on their own? Or did they have help?
The centerpiece of the film is never-before-seen lost movie footage of Jerry and Joe both at home in Cleveland and at the 1941 World’s Fair in New York. These stunning images, which has never been seen before, shows hundreds of children competing in Superman events, as well as the first person to ever dress as Superman.
For those who know some of the story of Jerry and Joe, LAST SON provides a completely new take on how the character was actually created, not just how he got tangled up in endless lawsuits. For those – as many Clevelanders still are – new to the story, LAST SON hopes to instill in its audience a new sense of pride and wonder at the imaginative self as they see two kids do something almost close to impossible.
Impossible as Superman.
