Night Science
Description: Ben Neill and Bill Jones will present a set of future dub jazz and interactive video for Neill’s newly created mutantrumpet. Dark dubstep beats and basslines meet the trippy, otherworldly sonic explorations of Neill’s newly redesigned electro/acoustic instrument, “mutantrumpet.” Bill Neill developed it in the early 1980s. It has now developed into a fully interactive and expanded electronic instrument. Jones provides the video imagery, a black and white urban dreamscape inspired by sci-fi noir films such as Godard’s Alphaville. The video and music are seamlessly integrated in real time by the mutantrumpet. Neill’s new CD Night Science will be released on Thirsty Ear this September.
Bio/Link: Since the mid 1990s, Neill and Jones have collaborated on a series of pieces integrating sonic and visual elements through a variety of technological means. Neill is a composer, performer, producer and inventor. Neill’s music blends electronica, jazz and ambient, blurring the lines between DJ culture and acoustic instrument performance. Bill Jones is a photographer, installation artist and performer based in New York. His work is concerned with the subject of light as physical phenomena and metaphorical figure, and inhabits the liminal spaces created by the conjunction of performance, installation and object art. Jones was a seminal figure in the Vancouver School of conceptual photography, along with such artists as Rodney Graham, Ian Wallace and Jeff Wall.
