2012 Call FAQs

Before applying, please read through these FAQs.

Am I Proposing a Performance or an Installation?
Submissions can be broken down into 2 different types: Performances and Installations. Performances happen on a stage or a performance area once or several times throughout the festival. An installation takes over and defines a space over the course of the weekend.

Will Ingenuity Help Me Build Something?
Our crew is tasked with building stages within the festival, providing general lighting, and providing electricity to installations. We do not have the crew to build or enhance your installation. If you are not prepared to do this on your own or work with those who can, you may want to consider presenting art in a gallery space or performing on a stage.

Will Someone Help Me Load Stuff Into the Space?
Ingenuity does not provide crew to load in or load out art, installations, projects, or technology. In general, folks constructing installations are tasked with bringing in materials to create a piece. We do assist with getting instruments and equipment to stages and hanging artwork, however.

I Have a Great Idea. Is That Enough?
You’ll be scored on your ability to execute your project at the time of submission. We’re not just looking for great ideas…we’re looking for a team that can execute that idea to it’s fullest potential. Partnerships are great, but the team should be assembled when you apply.

My Artwork Is Too Small for a Festival, Right?
We need big stuff, but we also need small stuff. Our Festival traditionally takes over large spaces in an urban landscape. The scope of work needs to take that into consideration. However, we are planning on having smaller galleries in order to present more intimate pieces.

How Long Can A Performance Be?
45 minutes is a magic number. This is about how long audiences will sit and watch something at the festival. But you can always prove us wrong!

Will Ingenuity Buy Me My Equipment?
Please amortize equipment cost. We do not pay for equipment purchases that can be used over the course of many months and years. If you aren’t prepared to make that investment, renting equipment is an option. Occasionally we are able to borrow equipment such as lighting and projectors, but this is the exception rather than the rule. Locating your own equipment sources increases your chances for being selected.

I Don’t Want Money – Am I In?
While we appreciate offers to accept no payment in order to display artwork, we stand by our criteria. Our goal is to present completely unique, cutting edge, and world class pieces that meet a standard of excellence.

How Do I Calculate a Budget That Ingenuity Will Reasonably Fund?
When considering budgets, please take everything into account including travel, lodging (if any), fees, equipment, rental, insurance, etc. We don’t have set amounts, but consider the following when looking at budgets: impact on the audience, alignment with our mission, long term relationship with Ingenuity, and the reputation of the proposer’s ability to complete the project. Statistics from past festivals show that most project were funded for under $500 and up to $1,000. A fair number were funded between $1,000 and $2,500 and a select few were funded up to $10,000.
